Guest teacher Don Scott leads Space Exploration Science activities Tuesday

Parents and their children ages 8 to 12 are invited to come up to the Comstock town of Silver City for fun activities about Space Exploration Science and NASA.

The event takes place Tuesday, June 28 from 10am to noon at the Silver City Schoolhouse at 385 High Street, Silver City, Nevada 89428. Email Quest Lakes at quest@hcclsc.org to reserve your child’s spot at this free event.

The presenter, Donald M. Scott, spent a decade with the Aerospace Education Services Program where he worked with NASA astronauts and scientists to develop K-12 activities and present those lessons to teachers and students in Nevada and Montana.

The morning includes a series of hands-on activities – from rockets to rocks and beyond – to help kids learn basic principles of Space Exploration Science. Participants will also find out about the adventures of astronauts such as Ellen Ochoa and John Young and the important work of Nevada scientists such as Dr. Wendy Calvin and Dr. Henry Sun.

Mr. Scott integrates fascinating tidbits about art and poetry into the activities. For instance, do you know who created the first artwork in space? Did you know that Apollo 15 astronaut Alfred Worden was also a poet, or that astronaut Alan Bean, the fourth person to walk on the moon, was also a painter?

Nevada has many connections to space exploration and NASA, and Mr. Scott will touch on some of those. For instance, Mars Perseverance analogue research has been done in Nevada, at Walker Lake; the first woman NASA-JPL Mission Controller (Maxine Nietz) resides in Carson City; and the University of Nevada and Desert Research Institute (DRI) are members of the Space Grant Consortium member of the Space Grant Consortium, a national network working to expand opportunities for Americans to understand and participate in NASA's aeronautics and space projects.

Sponsorship: This event is sponsored by Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties in partnership with the Silver City Volunteer Library. It is part of the annual science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEM + Arts = STEAM) program in Silver City, sponsored each summer by Healthy Communities with guest teachers from various organizations.

Where is Silver City? Silver City is located in Lyon County within a federally designated historic landmark. The mountain community is 3 miles from Virginia City, 7 miles from Dayton, and 11 miles from Carson City.
